On 1 July, recently returned Afghan boy shelters under a makeshift tent fashioned from luggage and cloth in the reception area at the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat Province.
June 2025 saw a significant surge in the number of families deported from Iran to Afghanistan—a troubling shift, as earlier returnees were mainly single men. Over 256,000 Afghans returned through the Islam Qala border in June alone, with up to 20,000 per day toward the month’s end. Children account for a quarter of these returnees, including over 5,000 unaccompanied or separated children.
UNICEF is scaling up child protection, health, WASH, nutrition, and education services to meet the urgent needs of returnee families. Many arrive in extremely vulnerable conditions, facing a deepening humanitarian emergency in already fragile border provinces.
